Hey everyone, We celebrated 2001 here with some snow! And if you don't know how exciting that is, let me tell you that we get snow here about once every 5 years or so. We were so snowed in (2-3 inches) that we did not make it to the fireworks stands before the roads were closed (quit laughing!). So at midnight, we had a snowball fight instead of a pyrotechnics display. What fun!

Hi crew and everyone. My books arrived today and I am delighted. I've been busy sending out the posters and publicity material and hope to have some fruitful results. Many, many thanks for all the hard work and for not giving up when things got tough. Carol

My big thanks to Tom Donadio and Kim Wadsworth for braving the harsh winter cold here in New York this morning to hang out outside NBC's Today show. I was re-reading some of the discussion board correspondence on New Year's Eve around 6pm when I came across Joan Lauren's posting suggesting we wrap up some books and take them to the Today show in person. I thought how perfect that would be to do on New Year's Day! To cut a long story short I took the Greyhound bus from Toronto to New York (my midnight moment was spent with a bunch of fellow bus passenger strangers somewhere between Buffalo and Syracuse) and arrived at the Today show around 6.30am. Kim and Tom arrived there too thanks to some late night phone call organizing by Connnie (while I was on the bus) but they had pre-taped the show three weeks earlier! Anyway, we all went down there again this morning and I managed to hand the books to Matt Lauer and Katie Couric the two hosts of the show. (The Today show is huge in the US). We also stood there with our Dawn signs and managed to appear on camera a couple of times. So we'll see what happens! If they like it, maybe they'll have us on the show properly. Again, thanks Tom and Kim, hope you've warmed up! Pics to follow...

More huge congratulations in order! Daniel Zeng from Singapore managed to get himself (and us) a massive three page feature with at least half a dozen project photos in the Singapore newspaper ZBNOW. You can get to it by going into the main site, going under Press Releases and clicking the 'all over the world' link. Down the bottom of the page is the link to Daniel's article. If you get coverage in a newspaper or any kind of media, be sure to get extra copies and send them in to us at the usual address. We are building a file of them to send as a package to Oprah.

Happy New Year to all. Sorry I'm late, but don't have electricity at home, so i have to wait til I get back to work to use my computer here. Hope everyone survived some rough weather! We had over an inch of ice on top of several inches of snow with 3 more inches of snow on top of that! It was a pain to travel in, but made for some great photo ops! I am working on roll # 13 so far.... Well, I quess I'd better get back to work.

Alx, First of all, let me appologize for not calling you back. I got home and was reminded that my daughter had a Doctor's appointment. I haven't even had time to look at the taping yet. I will edit both of them, today's and PhotoExpo+2000 onto one 8mm and get it right to you. I must admit, YOU THE MAN !!!!!! lol...... Keep warm.. Also to Kim, alias "COLD HANDS" --- It was great meeting you. Sure was fun.. Hope you got your hands warm... Time to start a fire.. Alx - I'll try to find that letter to Oprah.

Tom, no prob. If you can send up the tape to the usual address by air mail, that will be fine. I can use it later when we put together an edited 'showreel'. Connie is sending a VHS overnight so I can put stuff up on the web quickly. Cheers. Off to the bus terminal...

I got a fairly good piece of news last night. I entered a photograph I took of my stepdaughter (in 98) in the International Library of Photographys' contest. I found out it is on the web at their site(www.picture.com-put in my name and the picture will come up). It is going to be in a book that will be published sometime later this spring entitled'Shadows of Thought'. I will also be eligible for some pretty good monetary prizes! This contest is strictly for amateur photographers, so I am pretty pleased at this. This photo has been my "big" photo. In 98 it was grand prize winner at my companys' photo contest($50). Then in March of 99, it was published in Mother Earth News(another $50). In August of 2000 it won First place at our local county fair in Photojournalism. Needless to say, I am VERY proud of this photo. I just had to share my success with all my fellow photographers. Have a good day all!

Well, I am glad eveyone seems to have received their books. The five I ordered on November 14th, four to Japan and one to the Philippines still haven't been received 53 days later. It is a pity, because first they were intended as Christmas presents, and then as New Year presents. Foolishly I beleived the delivery times that were promised.

Tokyo, Japan - Thursday, January 04, 2001 at 20:34:17 (EST)
Peter, the delivery times are based on what we get from Canada Post in their literature and on their web site, to which we add a few extra days for good measure. Contrary to what some people might believe (considering the vitriol directed at us before Xmas), we do not deliver the books ourselves. All we can do is request a trace from Canada Post (but only after an inordinate amount of time has passed) if it seems the package has gone astray. If you think that is the case, please e-mail Karen at sales@millenniumphoto.com.

Thanks to all concerned, my books have come today, so I'm very happy. They were worth waiting for. One small problem, the poster cannot be used as it was wrapped around the books and is torn right down one side. I wondered if there was any chance of getting a replacement poster. What is happenning about "The Capsule" photographs? Best wishes to all Elsie

What is going on, dear folks? On 12th December, i ordered 12 books, which was confirmed the same day. In the message, a note said that i can expect another confirmation mail when the books actually were shipped. No other e-mail on that ever since. A week later i sent an e-mail asking about the delivery, and adding the request to include some promotion material. When i got no reaction to that, i posted a message to this discussion board together with a mail to sales. Still no sign. - Two days ago, i got a bank report where a Mother Pickle Distrib. in Walkerton CA was named to have deducted my account, in Canadian Dollars. When i phoned the bank about that, i gradually realized that this might be for the Millennium books. I can not remember ever having seen this name before. Could you explain what is going on, please? Are the books actually sent around 14th December? - Hope all did go well anyway, and that my enthusiasm about the Millenniumphoto project will be restored. Waiting for the good news, Freed

Dear Freed, Mother Pickle are our distributing company and they look after sending out the books, processing payments and confirming that books have been sent. You should have received a confirmation e-mail when your books were actually shipped (which I'm sure they have been) and I am following up with Mother Pickle about that. I have asked them to confirm to you by e-mail that the books were in fact sent.

For everyone's benefit, here's what actually happens when you place an order through the site (this may be helpful to you Edy as well). The details of the order (what you input on the screen) go direct to Mother Pickle Distributing in Walkerton, Canada. An automated response e-mail is immediately sent to confirm that your order was received. This e-mail contains an important order tracking number which radically speeds up future enquiries about your order. I strongly suggest that anyone writing to Mother Pickle (sales@millenniumphoto.com) include that order tracking number. You will get a much quicker response. Karen and Sindy receive the orders and pack them up for shipping, typically within 48 hours. Canada Post picks up the parcels and Karen or Sindy send you a manual e-mail to confirm that the books were shipped. Your credit card (if applicable) is then billed. It's a simple system and 99% of the time works very well. We here at the office (and now it's only me and Wesley) do not have easy access to the orders, which is why we defer enquiries to Karen and Sindy. Hope this is helpful! Karen and Sindy's phone number is 1-888-296-4743 (in North America) or 519-881-3597 (calling from outside North America).

What a fun day this was! I received the opportunity to be interviewed about 'our book' on a radio program that took phone calls from listeners. After a little while, Liz Larrabee calls in, and we end up discussing her photos and mine...which shows how much support we have for one another as members of this global community! I also want to thank everyone who wrote to me with the pronunciation of your name so I could say it correctly on the program. Anyway, the hour-long interview went very well, and I want to do more interviews! Made sure to mention the name of our book and gave the web address quite a few times. Then, I come home from work and there is a 'thank you' note waiting on the kitchen table personally signed by both President-elect George Bush and Laura Bush. I forwarded a copy of 'our book' to them as a Christmas gift with a letter explaining our little project and the great outcome. So, their acknowledgement was cooool, too. And yes, for those of you who know I keep a little journal signed by the photographers I meet, the Bush's note is being added to my journal tonight.

Dear friends I am somewhat woried. I ordered five books on nov 11th and paid the airmail price, ninety dollars. I know Nepal is along way away and we have just had Christmas, yet I see no sign of the books. I had ordered in two packages because theft can occure here in the mail so i hoped at worst at least one package would get through. still i wait and do not know what to do. I do not have a great wage and with the costs involved it would be a big burden to reorder. yet i may have to because i want to see the book. Please does anyone have a suggestion. yet I suspect there is not much to do except wait. On the down side I am still waiting for a book on treating chronic liver dissorder sent by my mother from England six months ago! oh dear. with thanks nick.

Browsing through the messages, it seems like a new book is writing itself: How (fast) do the Millenniumphoto books get to us... - My earlier suggestion to follow up with a CD (or DVD for that matter) on the Time capsule could eventually simplify all these logistics, and at the same time benefit the project greatly. Mass mailing possible if demand rises. Did you think of a co-sponsorship of Corel? They were one of the first publishers of (then admittedly not particularily high-quality) photo CD's, and they coincidentally reside in Canada.

I finally got my book today, and it is fantastic! Thanks to Alx, Karen and all the rest of the crew for a wonderful, albeit tough job of hanging in and not quiting. It was worth it. On a more personal note, I made my first sale this week. Three 8X10's of a huge pine tree that I took last January in the snow, using my multiple image filter. I also took up 13 rolls of the dreadful, but beautiful ice/snow/sleet storm that hit Arkansas before christmas. I got some really killer shots. I love to photograph nature in all her glory, and when she's not being so glorious. It doesn't seem to matter though, the beauty shines through regardless. I am in the process of setting up my web site, so hopefully soon, I'll be showing my pictures off to the whole world. Everyone take care.

Ken, good job promoting the book at the International Center for Photography. You may want to follow-up with the manager of the bookstore in a week or two...could even offer to do a book signing with some of your fellow New York photographers. Just a thought. Sally, good job on the article to appear in the Orlando paper. Persistence and follow-up pay big dividends, I've found.

I realize that many of you are dealing with the frustation on shipping delays and concerns as to where your books are. We have placed traces on many orders but unfortunalty if the order is shipped outside of Canada then our postal service must contact outside postal services and when they hear back they let us know (it seems in some cases they are as efficent at tracing as delivering). So I do empathize with the frustarion of waiting on the postal services. I thank you for your continued patience in waiting for your orders. I can only assure you that they were shipped out in a prompt fashion from the distribution centre and that we are trying to keep on top of the traces. I received this eamil yesterday and felt it appropriate to pass it on as well - many of you outside of Canada may also be expereicing customs delays as well. Again I thank you for your continued patience and support of the project. "I haven´t received the other orders yet, but from my experience with amazon.com-orders I would think, that the Dutch custom could be responsible for the delay, because they want to get the BTW (the Dutch VAT), and this took in average 3 additional weeks (for my amazon orders). This could perhaps help you to explain the delays to photographers from Europe. I´ll inform you about what happened, as soon as the rest of my orders arrive."

I would appreciate knowing what the cost of the book to photographers is at the current exchange rate in U.S. dollars. The book is offered on the MPP site at a "January Sale" price to customers of $30. If the original price was $40 in Canadian what is that, approximately, in American? What! a "sale" for the book at $29.95. My question is simple, WHY? I don't think it's fair for the customers who paid $40 u.s. for the book. Also, I would like to know how many copies have been sold so far? And what about the european distributor, how many have they bought or sold yet? And what is happening with advertising in Europe or Asia for that matter? I thought we had a distributor in England?? Thanks, Ray

"Visions of 2000: Photos win spot in millennium book Kevin P. Connolly Posted January 20, 2001 11:22 PM EST LONGWOOD -- One photo features a smiling Altamonte Springs postal clerk and a digital millennium clock counting down in the background. The other shot shows a bubbly Oviedo couple kicking up their heels at a New Year's Eve party in Longwood just before the clock struck midnight Those images, captured by Longwood photographer Sally McCrae Kuyper on Dec. 31, 1999, beat out thousands of other entries from around the world to be included in a new 320-page coffee-table book titled Dawn of the 21st Century. Kuyper, 65, is understandably proud. After all, the publishers of the Millennium Photo Project culled more than 269,000 shots taken by 3,500 photographers from 117 countries. Only 500 photos made the cut. Getting one photo picked was a long shot. So having two of her pictures selected for the international project was a real high point for Kuyper, who has considered herself a professional photographer for the past year and a "serious amateur" for the previous four years. "I just think it's really neat that I was in it," she said. "It's just great to be in something that's [being distributed] around the world." Kuyper, whose work has been published in seven national horticulture magazines since 1997, got into photography after an exhausting eight-year stint as a lawyer, a profession she took on late in life after her first marriage ended in divorce. But the legal work "was just so time-consuming that I didn't have time for a life," she said. "When you are in your 60s, you don't want to be working all the time." Photography opened a new and happier chapter in her life. She met her second husband, Derk, also a photographer, during a shoot at Leu Gardens in Orlando. One of the first photos she had published featured Derk, 71, working in their garden. The millennium book, released in November, is the end result of a project launched by a Toronto Internet entrepreneur in April 1999. He wanted to document the world's transition into a new century with photos taken by both professional and amateur photographers. The work of amateurs accounts for about two-thirds of the photos selected for the project, the first of its kind organized entirely on the Internet. The photos had to be shot between noon Dec. 31 and noon Jan. 1. With the contest open to the world, Kuyper knew the competition would be stiff. So she carefully planned the photo of her friend Virgil Hayes, a clerk at the Altamonte Springs Post Office on Montgomery Road. She figured the countdown clock hanging in the background would catch the attention of the publishers as an instantly recognizable symbol of the millennium craze. Hayes has a nice smile, too. She mounted her 35 mm camera, a Nikon F-5, on a tripod and made sure the lighting was just right before firing the shutter. Hayes was surprised when Kuyper gave him a copy of the hardcover book. His face is on page 298. "I didn't think it was going to be in something that was this big of a project," said Hayes, 42. "When I saw it, I said `Wow!' " Although that photo was staged, the one she snapped of her friends Julius and Mary Raff of Oviedo while they danced at a party at Rolling Hills County Club was entirely spontaneous. There was no tripod or special lighting -- just a simple "point-and-shoot" Pentax camera and a trained eye behind the lens. Kuyper likes the photo because it shows the Raffs "enjoying the party as if they were 20 years old." "We were really surprised to have our picture in there," said Mary Raff, 70. Kuyper gave them one copy of the book, and they bought three more for family members. "Our grandchildren think it's great. We are going to keep this for years to come," said Ruff, who is on Page 306 with her husband, Julius, 84. "We are on the same page as [photos from] England and Turkey and all sorts of places around the world." There's a chance Kuyper could earn a few bucks off the project. Anything the publisher makes after the first $100,000 will be shared equally among the selected photographers. The book costs $40. Kuyper said with a laugh she's not "holding her breath" for a windfall. "But that's not the point. The point is, for me anyway, it's a permanent record. It's a permanent record of what people did on the millennium, and it's forever." For more information about Dawn of the 21st Century call 1-888-296-4743 or visit www.smashing.com " The above story was printed along with 4 photos in today's Orlando Sentinel.

Er, I'm confused -- Ray, why would putting the book on sale be "unfair" to those who purchased it at full price? Businesses put things on sale all the time, if the sales stock is moving a little slower than anticipated. Also, for the lady who wanted to know the exchange rate for Canadian to US Dollars (I'm sorry, I've forgotten your name) -- you can usually find a chart of all major exchange rates in the business section of your daily newspaper. Hope that helps.

I have a question that ISN'T about shipping, for a change. (smile) I was going to be visiting a museum of photography here in New York shortly to see if the gift shop would carry the book. And it occured to me -- has there been any thought about making a touring exhibit of some of the project photos? I vaguely recall that the 50 judges' award winners would be in a touring exhibit, but may have confused that with something else. So, before I go -- should I also see if the museum would be interested in such an exhibit? IS there such an exhibit to be held?

Kim, I think you're missing a point here. The book is not necessarily slow in sale ( that is why I asked Alx for the number of book sales so far). It hasn't traveled in Europe and Asia or other countries yet (except for the photographer's copy which some have not received yet) and it's only been on the "market" for 2 months!!! not 2 years... Hi all, Two things for today. 1 - We have sent a copy of the book to the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography located in Ottawa, Ontario and are waiting to hear back from them. They have an account with us and carry several of our other photography titles. 2 - If you have shipping related inquiries please send them to me via email at sales@millenniumphoto.com. As many of you know we are an independant distribution company and Millennium Photo is just a part of what we do, because of this I do not get a chance to check this discussion board everyday for shipping inquiries, but I do check the email everyday. 3 - Mother Pickle is the name of the company that is processing the credit card orders.] Have a good day :-)

Connie, I'm slightly confused; are you saying that there IS indeed an exhibit for me to tell the museum about, or are you asking me to ask THEM what sort of an exhibit they would like?

I know Alx, that you say you cannot be responsible for sending out the books, but it's now getting on for 11 weeks. Here'a a copy of a letter I sent tyo Karen. Hi Karen. Hadn't heard anything from you yet. Now here is the problem. I ordered the one free book to be sent to the Philippines, and the four paid-for ones to be sent to Japan. This order was placed in early November. I am leaving the Philippines tomorrow as my photographic assignment is completed here, so there is now no way I can receive that one copy as I have no plans of returning there. Quite frankly all five books were to be given out as first Xmas presents, and then New Year presents. It is now the end of Januasry. Is there any way to cancel the four books and get my money back, and send my free copy to Tokyo. It is now some 11 weeks since these books were ordered, and I have now lost any interest in receiving them. Peter

For a number of years I have been buying books and travel items by mail and online from a San Francisco area bookstore called Book Passage. The other day I emailed them a letter about Dawn with a long description of the book and the email address so they can get an online look at it. But, I was wondering if one of the photographers in the Bay Area would be able to go to the store in person and show it to the manager to give the idea a little better reality. The store is located at 51 Tamal Vista Blvd, Corte Madera (Marin County); The owner is Elaine Petrocelli. It is a little hard for me to follow up with more than a sales brochure (which I have on order) since I live in NYC. Thanks.

I understand that I am not the only one having problems getting my books. My sister, Sandra and I order 14 books and have only received 4 so far. We are still waiting for the other 10. I have e-mailed this complaint before and did not get any reply except for the order number that I do not have. Will the books be coming soon or have they all sold out?

I agree with Luiz-- I look forward to the next project, too. I know some people are having problems with the distribution, which, to be fair, was supposed to be handled by the original publisher, not by Alx. It is much more than he bargained for when he launched this project, yet he has really hung in there! Thanks, Alx!

Hi there team, my free copy of the book arrived in yesterday's mail and WOW, GEE WHIZ, WHEW - its a real CORKA (which means beauty) and something I and my family will cherish forever. I have shown it already to two lots of Aussie pals that came to visit - have given them the website to have a look at the whole project and they are in turn going to be talking with other friends about it. There must have been something about the project on tv in Australia because one of the friends mentioned they had heard about it and thought to themselves at the time what a great idea. I know for a fact that there will be more book orders on their way from down under. I'm off into the city today to show my copy around to a few bookstores. The copies MUST be selling like hotcakes. I can't stop picking my copy up and glancing at the pics and reading what was happening. Well done team!
